BIO: Born in Brownfield, Texas, Sheryl Swoopes was raised by her mother Louise, and played basketball with her three older brothers. She began competing at age seven in a local children’s league, and eventually would lead her high school team to a state championship in 1988. Staying in state, Sheryl would win National Player of the Year, and a National Championship with Texas Tech in 1993. Three years later, Sheryl would capture Olympic Gold with the USA women’s basketball team in 1996. However, her basketball legacy was just beginning…Sheryl was recruited for the Houston Comets of the Women’s National Basketball Association during the 1997 inaugural season. She returned only six weeks after giving birth to her son to play the last third of the season and lead the Comets to the Championship. As a member of the Houston Comets, she accumulated over 2,000 career points, 500 career rebounds, 300 career assists and 200 career steals. Her extraordinary scoring and defensive ability have made her the first three-time WNBA MVP (2000, 2002, 2005) and the first three-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year (2000, 2002, 2003). Sheryl Swoopes is also a four-time WNBA champion (1997–2000), and is only the second player in WNBA history to win both the regular season MVP award and the All-Star Game MVP award in the same season. Indeed, Sheryl is also the first player in WNBA history to record a playoff triple-double, a rare feat in basketball she first accomplished at Texas Tech.
Sheryl would utilize her all-around skills to help Team USA win a total of three Olympic gold medals (1996, 2000, 2004). Her on the court success both internationally and in the United States garnered Sheryl the ESPY award for “Female Professional Basketball Player of the Year,” in 2000. Sheryl is also deservingly recognized as the first woman to have her own Nike shoe named after her (Air Swoopes). While honored to have received the distinguished accolades for her on court abilities, Sheryl is proud of her accomplishments off-court as well, and is very active in many charity/non-profit organizations.
In her spare time, Sheryl enjoys spending quality time with her son, playing volleyball, conducting camps and clinics, and traveling the country, speaking to audiences of all kinds. However, in a recent development, Sheryl has decided to return to the WNBA for the 2011 season. “The only reason why I’m doing it is because I still love the game,” Sheryl said during a conference call with reporters.
Sheryl is available for speaking engagements, autograph signings and public events.
