Rafer Johnson was the winner of a gold medal in the decathlon at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. As a sophomore at UCLA, he competed in his first decathlon and in 1955 won the gold medal at the Pan American Games. In the 1956 Olympics, Rafer suffered an injury and was forced to settle for a silver medal, but in 1958 he set a world record.

BIO: Rafer Johnson was the winner of a gold medal in the decathlon at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. In the 1956 Olympics, Rafer suffered an injury and was forced to settle for a silver medal, but in 1958 he set a world record.

The 1960 Olympics, it was a duel between former teammate at UCLA, Yang Chuan-kwang. After the first day of competition; Rafer led by 55 points even though Yang had finished ahead of Rafer in four out of five competitions. The second day, Rafer Johnson fell from the lead after hitting the first hurdle in the 110 hurdles and ended finishing .7 behind Yang. The two went back and forth with points and going into the final event, Rafer led by only 67 points. Rafer ended up winning the gold medal with Yang taking home the silver.

In 1960, Rafer Johnson was the recipient of the Jame E. Sullivan Memorial Award for the outstanding amateur athlete. Rafer also lit the Olympic torch at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Rafer is available for speaking engagements, corporate events and fundraisers.
