BIO: Former Canadian hockey player Mario Lemieux is known to be one of the best players of all time. He has played 17 seasons for the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1984-2006. As a large player with gifted skills and fast skating abilities, Mario was a constant threat. Currently, he is the principal owner and chairman of the board for the Penguins after buying the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. Mario Lemieux is the only person to have won the Stanley Cup as a player and owner.
As a player for the Penguins, he led the team to two Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992, and as a owner won a Stanley Cup in 2009. Mario has led the Canadian Olympic team to a gold medal in 2002, a championship at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, and a Canada Cup in 1987. He was the recipient of three Hart Trophies for MVP of the NHL, six Art Ross Trophies for leading scorer, and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP.
Upon retirement, he was ranked seventh all time sorer in the NHL with 690 goals and 1,033 assists; all time record holder for goals scored per game over his entire career and has been inducted into the Canada’s Walk of Fame. Unfortunately, he believes these numbers could be higher but had to suffer health problems throughout his career. These include spinal disc herniation, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, chronic tendinitis of a hip-flexor muscle, and chronic back pain so severe that other people had to tie his skates. Because of health problems, he was forced to retire twice. Immediately after his first retirement in 1997, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Mario Lemieux was given the honorable title of Knight by Queen Premier Jean Charest in 2009 and in 2010 was given the Order of Canada from then Governor General Michaelle Jean. The year he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, he created the Mario Lemieux Foundation to fund medical research projects. Mario Lemieux is available for speaking engagements, personal appearances, and corporate events.
