Born in New York City, Lisa Fernandez began playing softball at the age of 8. At 12, she played in a local children's league; but when she tried out as a pitcher, her coach told her she didn’t have the correct size and build. Fortunately, this did not stop Lisa in her pursuit of becoming a softball superstar.

BIO: Born in New York City, Lisa Fernandez began playing softball at the age of 8. At 12, she played in a local children’s league; but when she tried out as a pitcher, her coach told her she didn’t have the correct size and build. Fortunately, this did not stop Lisa in her pursuit of becoming a softball superstar.

Upon moving to California, where Lisa Fernandez attended high school, and later UCLA, she became a 4-time All-American, a 2-time NCAA champion, a 3-time Honda-Broderick award winner, and won the Honda Cup her senior year. She also led the nation in hitting her senior year (.510), and also had the lowest ERA (0.23). She broke 7 UCLA records and holds the NCAA record for winning percentage at 93% (93-7). It was now safe to say that Lisa’s size and build would work just fine. Indeed, that size and build that was once considered unusual for a pitcher would lead her to become the foundation around which USA Softball built its teams. As a member of the 1996 and 2000 Gold Medal Olympic teams, Lisa is also a three-time MVP and All-American at the USA National Softball Championships and was named Outstanding Pitcher in 1997 and 1998. She has won the Women’s Sports Foundation Athlete of the Year award in 1994 and was a nominee two other times. As perhaps the most well-known softball player in history, Fernandez has been featured in USA Today, Sports Illustrated, People Magazine, and Women’s Sports and Fitness.

Currently, Lisa Fernandez conducts softball clinics nationwide, and excels in motivational speaking.
