BIO: Ian Thorpe is one of Australia’s most well-known sportsmen and his humility and commitment to helping others has made him known worldwide. Ian recently announced he would be returning to the competitive world of swimming, setting his sights on the 2012 Olympics in London. Throughout his career, Ian has broken twenty-two world records, three gold and two silver medals at his first Olympic Games and two gold, one silver and one bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games which makes him one of Australia’s greatest Olympians ever. Ian Thorpe has won eleven World Championship titles, the most ever, ten Commonwealth Games gold medals and nine Pan Pacific titles. He is also the only swimmer in history to defend a 400 meter freestyle world and Olympic title.
In 2001, Ian was awarded The World’s Most Outstanding Athlete by the IAAF, the best representative of Australian culture, attitude and ideals and was awarded the 2002 Australian Face Abroad Award. He was awarded the Outstanding Male Athlete for the 24th Commonwealth Sports Awards, Sydney’s Greatest Ever Male Sports Star and the 2003 Telstra Australian Swimmer of the Year for the fifth year in a row.
Ian Thorpe also makes charitable donations to the Lifeline and the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia. After the Sydney Olympics, Ian created his own charity, Ian Thorpe’s Foundation, on the foundation that all children should be treated equally. Ian raises his voice on behalf of children on numerous occasions; Aboriginal children and their families who cannot afford the same rights as their fellow neighbors and to help improve their health and education.
