The next year she swam the longest swim in history, 102.5 miles, from the island of Bimini to Florida without a wetsuit, this record still stands today.

BIO: In 1978 Diana Nyad attempted to swim 100 miles from Cuba to Florida, but fell short after being in the water for 41 hours and 49 minutes due to strong currents and bad weather. The next year she swam the longest swim in history, 102.5 miles, from the island of Bimini to Florida without a wetsuit, this record still stands today. Diana has also broken a 50 year old record when she circled Manhattan Island in a new time of 7 hours and 57 minutes. She is a member of the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

In the summer of 2011, Diana Nyad attempted to swim from Havana to the Florida coast. On the morning of August 9th, exactly 29 hours in the water, she announced she would stop after strong currents, shoulder pain since her 3rd hour in the water, and her flare-up of asthma.

Currently, Diana Nyad provides a weekly five-minute radio piece on sports for KCRW called The Score, and for the Marketplace radio program. Previously, she hosted the public radio program “The Savvy Traveler.” She also works to teach teenagers about the effects of sexual abuse. Diana is available for speaking engagements, corporate events and motivational speaking. Diana is partnered with Spire Institute, Key West Harbour Yacht Club, NRDC, Shark Shield, Secret, BravaBody and Southernmost Hotel Collection.
