BIO: Bob Beamon is an American long jumper who set a world record of 29.2 feet at the 1968 Olympics Games in Mexico City. His record broke the existing record by 21.65 inches and Bob’s record stood for 23 years, until Mike Powell of the US finally broke it in 1991.
Bob Beamon attended North Carolina A&T, the University of Texas at El Paso and Adelphi University where he also played basketball. At the Olympic Games in Mexico, Bob had no idea that he had broken the record or even surpassed the 29 foot milestone. Teammate Ralph Boston walked over and told him that he jumped more than 29 feet, and Bob passed out!
After his great accomplishment, Bob Beamon competed off and on until his retirement before the 1972 Olympics. He eventually became a track coach, worked with youth programs and participated in a mixture of sports-related activities. The US Olympic Hall of Fame was established in 1983, and Bob was one of the first athletes to be inducted. Bob is available for satellite media tours, personal appearance and speaking engagements.
