BIO: Former professional tennis player, Billie Jean King won an amazing 12 Grand Slam singles titles, 16 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, and 11 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. Billie is an advocate against sexism in sports and society, and won “The Battle of the Sexes” in 1973, where she defeated Bobby Riggs.
Billie Jean King is the founder of the Women’s Tennis Association, the Women’s Sports Foundation, and owner of World Team Tennis.
Her most competitive years were 1966 through 1975 where she won 32 of her career 39 Grand Slam titles, 12 of her Grand Slam singles titles, 9 of her 16 Gran Slam Women’s doubles titles, and 10 of her 11 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She retired from competitive play in doubles in March 1990 after her doubles match with her partner, Jennifer Capirati.
After her career as a tennis player, she went on to fight for equal prize money for both men and women’s games and helped lead player efforts to support the first professional women’s tennis tour called the Virginia Slims. In 1973 Billie Jean King became the first President of the women’s players union – the Women’s Tennis Association. The next year, she and then husband Larry King and Jim Jorgensen, founded WomenSports and started the Women’s Sports Foundation. She is a member of the Board of Honorary Trustees for the Sports Museum of America. In the 1990’s she became the captain of the U.S. Fed Cup team and the women’s Olympic tennis squad. She helped Lindsay Davenport, Gigi Fernandez, and Mary Joe Fernandez all capture an Olympic gold medal.
